Rohini

HER JOURNEY

Purnima’s path to Radha Kunda was far from simple. Born into poverty in West Bengal, she never had the chance for an education. At only twelve years old, she was married by her family to a young man from her village, though she was still too young to leave her family home and move into his. For years, they lived separately and spent minimal time together. Before she could ever live with him, or even truly know him, her husband tragically passed away.

Still only a teenager, her family urged her to be willing to remarry, reminding her of her youth and of the life ahead of her. But Purnima made a decision that revealed the strength of her character even then: she chose not to remarry, but instead to dedicate her life to her spiritual path. For many years, she lived in her brother’s family home, helping her sister-in-law as much as she could, until her father passed away. Her mother, now a widow herself, decided to move to Radha Kunda so as not to be a burden on the family. Purnima soon followed, choosing to care for her mother and live by her side. Together, the two of them began their service of cleaning Radha Kunda, honoring the sacred waters day after day with quiet devotion.

A Life Transformed

Rohini was born in a small village in West Bengal to a family that, though loving, struggled with severe poverty. Education was not possible, but her parents arranged a good marriage for her, and for some years she lived happily with her husband. Together they shared dreams of a family, but life turned painfully when their infant daughter fell ill and passed away.

Not long after, tragedy struck again. On his way to work, her husband lost control of his motorcycle and was taken from this world, leaving Rohini a widow while still so young. The grief of losing both her husband and daughter was almost unbearable. Her family, hoping to restore some stability, urged her to remarry. But Rohini knew her heart could not bear it. She longed instead for a life of devotion.

She came to Radha Kunda, first staying with relatives in the area. But when they too began to pressure her into marriage, she realized she must take a different path. Alone and uncertain, she found refuge in the RadhaSeva community. Here she discovered not only safety and dignity but also the chance to dedicate herself to meaningful service.

Today, Rohini cooks daily for 150 widowed women at the RadhaSeva ashram. Along with a few other ladies, she prepares over 800 chapattis each morning, made in the traditional West Bengali style—rolled and cooked on the floor over small stoves. She also helps prepare large vegetable dishes for the widows’ feasts, chopping with a simple boti knife, the traditional cutting tool of her heritage. Her food is made with love, simplicity, and devotion, nourishing the community both physically and spiritually.

Outside of her cooking seva, Rohini’s heart is drawn to kirtan and prayer. She loves to sing in the temple kirtans and often joins the other widows in playing mridanga drums before the deities of Radha Madan Mohan. Her daily japa brings her solace, and she enjoys walking around Radha Kunda, visiting the sacred temples that inspire her devotion.

With RadhaSeva’s support, Rohini now lives independently in her own small flat near Radha Kunda. For her, it is a gift beyond measure to have both freedom and community: the dignity of her own home, alongside the love and strength of a sisterhood of widows who share her journey.

To know Rohini is to know quiet strength. She has endured deep heartbreak, but she has transformed her life into one of service, music, and devotion. She is a reminder that even after life’s greatest losses, the soul can rise again, finding peace in service and joy in the holy land of Radha Kunda.
