Purnima

HER JOURNEY

Purnima’s path to Radha Kunda was far from simple. Born into poverty in West Bengal, she never had the chance for an education. At only twelve years old, she was married by her family to a young man from her village, though she was still too young to leave her family home and move into his. For years, they lived separately and spent minimal time together. Before she could ever live with him, or even truly know him, her husband tragically passed away.

Still only a teenager, her family urged her to be willing to remarry, reminding her of her youth and of the life ahead of her. But Purnima made a decision that revealed the strength of her character even then: she chose not to remarry, but instead to dedicate her life to her spiritual path. For many years, she lived in her brother’s family home, helping her sister-in-law as much as she could, until her father passed away. Her mother, now a widow herself, decided to move to Radha Kunda so as not to be a burden on the family. Purnima soon followed, choosing to care for her mother and live by her side. Together, the two of them began their service of cleaning Radha Kunda, honoring the sacred waters day after day with quiet devotion.

A Life Transformed

Purnima brightens the faces of everyone around her. Her presence carried both warmth and lightness, the kind of joy that makes others feel at ease. Among the widowed women of Radha Kunda, she is known for her generosity, gentle spirit, and humor, and it is easy to see why.

Today, Purnima and her mother live together in a simple private flat, where she is able to cook, care for her elderly mother, and maintain the autonomy she values so deeply. For her, this life is a blessing, a refuge from the crowded, impersonal ashrams where widows are often forced to live.

Her days begin before sunrise. Each morning, Purnima joins a few of the other widowed women in cleaning Radha Kunda and Shyama Kunda, along with the temples and sacred pathways that wind through the village. When her work is done, she circumambulates Radha Kunda with her prayer beads in hand, stopping to sing, pray, and join in the temple activities. Everywhere she goes, she is welcomed with affection.

Her bright laughter and sweet songs are cherished by the community, and the local priests and devotees recognize her as a beloved and devoted presence.

Alongside her seva at the kundas, Purnima has also cultivated a love for cooking. At the RadhaSeva widows’ feasts, she helps prepare wonderful, large vegetable preparations, bringing the flavors of her Bengali heritage that delight the widowed community. As much as she enjoys cooking for the other widows, she loves serving them with a smile even more. For Purnima, this act of service, nourishing others with her hands and heart, feels like an offering of love, and those who enjoy her preparations can feel it as well.

To see Purnima now is to see a life transformed. Once a child-widow with little support or opportunity, she has blossomed into a woman full of joy and faith, a caretaker not only of her mother but of the sacred heart of Vrindavan itself.

She is grateful every day for the community and life she has found, to be able to live independently in a safe and loving home, and to live in community with those who know her and are grateful to be with her. The light she carries and shares so freely has been a blessing to all of Radha Kunda.
